Majority of Voters Ages 18-29 Support Same Sex Marriage

UTICA, NY - Likely voters oppose same sex marriage 49%-42%, but they support civil unions of same sex couples 70%-23%.

Same sex marriage support decreases with age, with 59% of voters ages 18-29 being in favor, but only 32% of those 65 and older saying the same. However, while 10 percentage points lower than 18-29 year-old support (75%), nearly two-thirds of those 65 and older are in favor of same sex civil unions.

The table below shows the percentages of support for same sex marriage and same sex civil unions for all voters and several demographic groups.

Also, 55% say they would support having the government issue civil union licenses, and non-religious organizations performing civil union ceremonies while leaving it to the Church or place of worship to perform marriage ceremonies. A quarter oppose that statement and 20% are not sure. Majority support is found in all age groups and ideologies (Liberal, Moderate, Conservative).

IBOPE Inteligência International conducted an online survey of 1,804 likely voters. A sampling of IBOPE Inteligência's online panel, which is representative of the adult population of the US, was invited to participate.   Slight weights were added to region, party, age, race, religion, gender, education to more accurately reflect the population. The margin of error is +/- 2.3 percentage points. Margins of error are higher in sub-groups.  The MOE calculation is for sampling error only.
